I don't think I'm contracting myself. Nice doesn't mean expensive. I consider a nice bike anything that serves its purpose well.
My townie cost less then 200 to build and it looks exactly like an 80s era steel single speed. Thieves usually steal flashy bikes or those with crappy locks. Maybe, someday, I'll encounter one who knows how nice an internally geared sturmey archer hub is. Shit happens. Until then, I will ride my townie to the bars without trepidation.
A bike can ride well without being expensive or flashy. You just need the right collection of mechanically sound parts within a certain budget. e.g. I once had an x-4 derailler that shifted better than my older generation XTR.
Does that make sense?
