Not that I can be particularly helpful until late July, but my input would be to search for a new location.  Santa Teresa was a great last minute option however aside from lack of gravity events, the course also caused an unnecessary number of pinch-flats preventing several people from finishing.  (I would just be worried that we would have a lower turnout than last year).

My suggestion is to do a scouting ride up highway 35 on the ridge.  There are TONS of "open spaces" and (san mateo/santa clara) County Parks which are easier to get in contact with.  There are also some campsites up there which will undoubtedly have plenty of space in oct/nov.  I suggest:
1) Cruise Google Maps along hwy 35 north of Santa Cruz up to San Mateo
2) Go on some scouting rides
3) Relentlessly call/message and email all curators of desirable parks to initiate contact (gracefully nonetheless).  Once some sort of relationship is established and you have the attention of a ranger or administrator who can help with the process

4) as an aside, perhaps initially offer that the team do some volunteer work doing trail maintenance or flora restoration before or after the race and promise that the park will be left nicer than before we used it...
Many park curators/rangers largest job is plant/trail restoration work and are likely to appeal more to a team who is interested in preserving the park as a primary goal of the race as well...

Perhaps a duo with ample people-skills (who also has the time to make daily phone calls or emails) should take on this job.

Ready, set, go...

p.s. also consider talking with CCCX.  they have a ton of experience putting on races on the central coast and probably tons of contacts.  maybe with their help this race could be non-collegiate as well.  if nothing else, they probably have a huge email list of people who might be interested in helping.  Consider asking for help from some of the multitudes of retired 50-60 year old bike obsessed men who live in the area.

ALSO, check out the Hollister Hills Vehicular Recreation Area.  It's a fat off-roading park out in the boonies that has tons of camping and tons of trails of all kinds.  I imagine they wouldn't give a damn if we built gravity courses and are not worried about damaging single-track and such.

Camping would be no problem and we could possibly hold the cross country course out into the peripheries where there is tons of singletrack and open space.

It may seem kind of ghetto, but it might also be super cool...imaging a short track course on the mini-bike race course!

I will help out as much as I can, even though I won't see this race turn into actuality on account that I am going on EAP in the fall.  :'( :'( :'(

Let's do a team ride this saturday and then maybe we can get burritos and come to my house and we can start calling places.

Thanks everybody who just volunteered. I'm going to start making a list of all the different places that are possibilities that we need to get in contact with....after my midterm on Wednesday. You guys can do that on Saturday, but for some of us it's still road season. I'll be at Cat's Hill in Los Gatos, so I can't attend.

Thanks Brendan, great suggestions, I actually know some of the CCCX guys and I think that would be one of the better options because it will be way easier to do NORBA categories.

we just had our road race next to that moto place.

Brendan brought up a good point.  CAMPING.  That is a main part of MTB races, and people don't like staying in motels.

Since I can do nothing active about all this right now, I want to heavily lobby for some investigation into Hollister Hills.  Green sticker autos are forbidden during the summer until october 1, maybe if we have the 1st race of the season it wont even be open to cars yet anyway!!!

Ok so I actually can't ride on Saturday unless it is after 12:00. How does Sunday morning sound? We could do the team ride at one of these prospective locations to check out the scene--I would be willing to drive. I'll call the Hollister place tomorrow and get the DL.

Keep brainstorming!
I ride with Clydesdales.

So, I'm having withdrawals from the team.  And I want an excuse to hang out.  And we need to do mountainy things.  Lets have this meeting fools.
Love you.

Ok so I called Hollister Hills, and they said we are free to ride the mtn bike trails in their nature park area, however they were not down for us hosting a race there. Apparently it is not "within their budget." Although it seemed futile, I really should have harassed her about it more because I don't know how a bike race could be more expensive than ATV free-for-all every weekend...

When do you guys want to ride this weekend? I agree with MScott, but I don't understand..

No one showed up to the team ride today. I was a team of one...

It was fine by me, I was pretty tired from yesterday, and did only about 10 miles.

Anywho, whats the dealo with tomorrow? I want a super good veggy burrito with hellaz good gauc and maybe some yummy salsa. Oh, I guess I should ask more about the meeting...
